Scylla was humbled by going to school outside of the "castle" in a place called the "tiers" (think like Ba Sing Se from Avatar or the town in Attack on Titan, the further out from the leader, the worse the conditions). Scylla reminds me of a cozy mystery MC, she will throw herself into situations to get the answers she wants without regards to what happens to her. Overall not a bad MC, I was never annoyed with her, and even thou there is a slight romance going on, it didn't overtake the story, nor did Scylla turn dumb once with the boy or to get the boy.

The mystery itself was good, thou I knew who it was at around the 40% mark, but Xia did a good job of making me doubt myself when she kept throwing more suspects/motives at me.

I enjoyed the world building, the only issues I had was Xia explained in detail the gondola system twice, and I had slight confusion when it came to if Scylla had been to Galen's apartment or not. Once it was said "I know where he (Galen) lives, but early on he had made me promise to never visit unless it was life-or-death" but then later states "I've know where Galen lives for quite some time, but I've never actually entered his apartment. Mostly because Galen refused to let me in the first few times I'd randomly showed up at his door. After a while, I'd just stopped trying, accepting it as one of his quirks". Just comes across confusing, to me anyhow. *shrug*

Overall a good book, and I'd pick up book 2 if this was a series or try another book from the same author.
booklife4lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10079152533708456369noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3595498814257636107.post-43401591372370700762022-01-15T21:49:00.000-05:002022-01-15T21:49:04.892-05:00Review: The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling!

The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling

Kindle/318pgs

I guess I should have looked at reviews before reading this as I was aware that sex was going to be heavily involved in my witch book *le sigh*

Harry Potter exists in this world and the main characters live "kind of" the same life, which I feel is slightly lazy writing to make sure your reader is aware that Harry Potter exist, and your main character even refers to it and then write the MCs life pretty close to that story as well. Vivi lives with her aunt (no uncle in sight but she even has a cousin living there), her mom was a witch who died when Vivi was young, thou her mom didn't teach her much magic. Vivi works at a college that has a special "magic" building/library.

Besides that, Vivi is a decent enough character, thought too much about how she dressed and was weird towards the other witches at the school she worked at. Rhys (the love interest/ex from the title, and also our other POV) is also decent, probably should have liked to Vivi about why he had to go back home when he told her about having to break off his engagement since he was falling for her, would have saved everyone some time and trouble. He also said this: Rhys had caused . . . twenty? Two dozen? Too many to count, really. which who says two dozen after saying twenty but what made it so weird/dumb was then he had an interaction with his dad: “Half a year,” his father replied because why say a normal thing like “six months”? but like dude you just said something equally as head scratching so like what?

The ending was super rushed, like SUPER RUSHED, maybe a page was written detailing the climax of this book, and up to this point it was very boring, nothing noteworthy happen, just tons of sex, the main characters straight up ignore the major issue so they could have more sex.
booklife4lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10079152533708456369noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3595498814257636107.post-56509262189923599322022-01-15T21:30:00.006-05:002022-01-15T21:30:51.522-05:00Review: Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao!

Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao.

Kindle/400pgs

A female main character is actually written strongly and wants to take down a misogynist government. Giant alien monsters whose bodies are turned into fighting machines! Think Pacific Rim but the giant fighting machines aren't actual machines but they're the corpses of the aliens you're fighting, oh and with some elemental magic as well.

Side rant about something before review: I do try to be as cultural as I can be, and feel like I know some things about Asian cultures, but since China is a little bit more secretive of what all is going on over there, I don't know much. I have always been aware of foot binding and more or less the way their did it, but it still really hit me when the main character's own grandma just nonchalantly broke her feet and bound them. I also didn't know there was an actual shape they would try to achieve (lotus feet) and I did google the images of what was known as "perfect" ones.

I'm always on the look out of strong female main characters, I can not stand reading about some girl who can't "go on" if she loses the guy or doesn't get the guy, oh you will lose a star or two if you're female MC puts the fate of the world aside as she tries to get some dude to notice her *insert huge eye roll*. Zetian is probably one of the strongest MCs I've encountered, she straight up murders a dude and carries his body out for the cameras to see with a freaking smile on her face! (the dude totally deserves it) Zetian has a goal of taking down the misogynist pilot system that is currently killing hundreds of girls, granted those girls are helping to keep the monsters at bay, but Zetian thinks there is another way or knows she is strong enough to be who own pilot. I don't have much in my cons section against Zetian, can't even think of one right now actually.

Slight spoilers ahead... there is a love triangle in this book. First we have Zetian's childhood friend, YIzhi, who is mega rich and sneaks out to see her in the forest near her house. His father is very connected in the big city. In no way can he be with her thou, at least not in her current standing. Then we have Li Shimin, the murdered who they call Iron Demon. He kills every single girl who enters into the pilot system with him, he has major issues, and you feel for him by the end. <spoilers>The love triangle turns into a true triangle thou, Zetian hooks up with both boys and then they boys hook up with each other!

The book's flow is decent, but then you get the climax and ending thrown at you, it's the main reason I'm only giving it 3.5 stars. Super rushed ending in my opinion, I needed more time with the big fight and <spoilers> the whole golden dragon/prince thing, like really, you're only gonna give me a few pages of that, it's a freaking golden dragon and a prince WHO HAS BEEN FROZEN FOR 100S OF YEARS! AHH.

I liked the book overall and am looking forward to book 2.

Trigger warnings for this book are r@pe, alcohol/addiction, sexual assault.
booklife4lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10079152533708456369noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3595498814257636107.post-74914992484120012622021-06-23T14:38:00.001-04:002021-06-23T14:38:10.566-04:00Review: Oona Out of Order! Speaking of main character, Oona needed to calm down a bit, she didn't want to even try to listen to Kenzie when he was explaining things to her, she just ran away, then turned to drugs, i really don't know how she didn't die from overdose or have some major issues later in her life (or maybe she did, but we never saw it, i really want more books to show the other years). She was so freaking selfish when it came to seeking out Dale then what happened to Dale, then not leaving letters for her next jump then getting shitty when she arrive to no letter, like what, you can't be like eff future me, then instantly jump to "what the eff past me", THEY'RE ALL YOU. At least she stuck to watching her money and making sure she didn't eff that part up, but then that kinda of just comes off selfish as well, like she couldn't imagine living a poor person life so she did the bare minimum to make sure that didn't happen.

SPOILERS

I HATED how she went about seeking out Makenzie when she found out she had a kid, like you knew what would happen to him, you knew he would find you at some point, you know he needs to have a loving family right now since they're about to die, but nah you just went in there and EFFED up everything. why would you ever think that taking him to a concert was a good idea, like how can you think that would ever work, and all you did was dye your hair to hid your identity from his moms, you didn't cover your MASSIVE TATTOO WITH HIS FREAKING INITIALS ON IT. Also why would you stay with the husband that you divorce the year after, you know it was going to end badly, you knew you weren't happy, you knew you could just walk away and save you money and heartache but you just didn't, but then when you were mad at your mom, you ruined her relationship without a second thought, again, hella SELFISH.

booklife4lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10079152533708456369noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3595498814257636107.post-84283512568845580692021-06-16T09:44:00.003-04:002021-06-16T10:02:58.193-04:00Review: Monument 14! Some little round marbles and some big knotty lumps with gray parts and gravel stuck inside them. Quickly it takes out the big kids buss, and the driver of the little kids bus, which she is another role model of mine, just straight up drives into the front of this grocery store to save her kids, freaking badass, and if that wasn't enough, she then backs up and saves most of the older kids. The older kids see some shit, their driver is killed, another kid is killed, Josie's friend hence why she goes into shock. Once the kids are semi settled into the store, and the alive driver goes in search of medical help, we get earthquakes, which messes up the store pretty bad. Last but the most important issue is when the chemical warfare plant in town cracks open and starts seeping chemicals into the air. These chemicals affect according to blood types so we have:

People with blood type A will develop severe blisters on all exposed skin. After prolonged exposure, the internal organs will begin to hemorrhage, leading to organ failure and death.

People who have type AB blood suffer from paranoid delusions and possible hallucinations.

There is confusion as to the effects on people with type B blood. It is possible they will suffer from long-term reproductive difficulties and sterility. But there is hope that people with type B blood suffer no consequences from exposure.

People with type O blood, which is the most common blood type, will become deranged and violent. Avoid these people at all costs. Containing them in a closet or basement is advised, if possible.

Our main character Dean is type O, as is Astrid, and little Chloe. Alex and Jake are type B (which it mentions long term difficulties but Jake can't even get it up a few days after being exposed to the gas for a few mins, so they greatly underestimated that issue.) The twins are AB. Brayden is type A. They might have mentioned more but that's what i remember.

This gas is bad, and according to the news it was disperse in 3 to 6 months, which freaks out these kids, but we're told later on by Alex that they can live in the store for 20 to 24 months! Even is Alex is wrong and they have just like 12 months, they're still so much better off just staying in the store and waiting for the gas to go away so it'll be so much safer for them to go out and find their families (if they're even still alive, i mean, shit got bad out there).

So why didn't this kids stay in the store, well lets go over that. First some grownups show up at the back door wanting in, Mr. w/e his name, and Robbie. The kids vote to let them in, why, well simply because they have "information". WHO DA FUCK CARES ABOUT INFO RIGHT NOW. like legit, you can just take trips up the roof, like send Jake or Alex since they're the best off going out into the gas, and watch what's going on out there. Alex makes a video walkie talkie, you can totally go out and place it somewhere and watch the feed for a few days so you can get the feel for outside. Or even better yet, you can just stay inside and live there just fine until the damn gas goes away, these kids are idiots. So anyhow they let them in, which ends badly for them, as Sasha (a middle schooler i think, she's only freaking THIRTEEN), Robbie claims she throws herself at him, she says otherwise, she has spent the entire book trying to get every male in this book to notice her, like giving herself a wet tshirt without a bra on type things. Sasha claims Robbie tried to rape her. So Robbie and Jake start fighting, a gun gets thrown in and Robbie is shot, he dies, but also Brayden gets shot, in the shoulder, it's pretty bad, becomes infected. Oh and the other adult Mr w/e his name dies as well, i would assume from blood poisoning based on his symptoms. The kids are super worried about Brayden, they send Jake out to find help, hospital is abandoned, but he finds a note on the wall that Dean and Alex's parents left saying they're in Alaska, Jake abandons them, big shocker, so Niko freaks out and wants to leave right away. When Jake was out, he took the video things, he left it sitting outside when he left, the freaking smart thing for Niko to do is watch the feed for a few days, see how bad it was outside, then plan out a way to get to Denver, but nah, he wants to leave 10mins after Jake leaves.

Astrid and Dean want to stay behind because they're O and will maybe kill the kids in the bus, they keep Chloe too, which makes no sense, she's like 5yrs old, she's drugged and tied up, you have 4 teens on this bus, they can easily hold her down and drug her more during the trip, it makes no sense to leave her behind, i don't get it. You find out Astrid is 4 months pregnant and she is scared if she goes, the baby will be affected by the gas, which newsflash, you already exposed it when you went ape shit in the bathroom earlier but you do you. Also the twins stay behind because they "know" Dean, but like Alex left, and they knew him too, and they spent the whole book wanting their parents, so why stay?

Overall i really like this book, i only lowered my rating because the way Dean talked about Astrid and how he was written sometimes, like this line; Her shirt rode up during the scuffle and I caught sight of her lower back. Tan, muscled, gorgeous. (which how are lower backs "muscled") or this one; In the ruse of brushing away water, I ran my thumb over her eyebrow. It was a marvel of God, how perfect it felt under my thumb. It's an eyebrow dude like the fuck, and he also watched her try to have sex with Jake, which ick.
booklife4lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10079152533708456369noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3595498814257636107.post-80444650892800072122021-06-13T21:28:00.001-04:002021-06-13T21:28:36.981-04:00Review: Life As We Knew It! She has the major issues of being an "outsider" in her town, she's Japanese in a white town, she wants to find herself and her identity. She grew up with only her mom, ask about her dad a few times, but otherwise felt like her childhood with just her mom was enough, til one day she and her BF finds a poem from her dad to her mom (which is hecka romantic that her mom was using it as a bookmark 18 ish years later). Izzy of course finds out she's a freaking princess, which knowing that she was already having issues finding herself just because she was Asian in a white area, she wasn't going to have the best time trying to be a princess among all these royals who have grown up living their royal life and knowing all they know. She was crazy impulsive, didn't think twice about how her dumb shit would reflect on others, didn't think about how a royal should react to shit, nah, she just did what she wanted. She was all into finding herself but didn't put really any effort into learning how to be a royal, like that could have very well been your "true" you and you just didn't even try, ugh.

 Akio (body guard/love interest)

Royal body guard, tall, handsome, can kill you easily, fades into background easily as well, what's not to love. Akio is 100% devoted to his family and to his pride of being a royal guard which as been passed down in his family. he wants to be in the Japanese version of the air force, but when his mom gets sick and his dad has to step down as a royal guard, Akio steps up and becomes the guard instead, so again, very devoted to his family and understanding that you have to make some sacrifices for your family. but then in walks Izzy and this dude's poor world is flipped.

Asian Girl Gang (Izzy's friends from home)

You don't see too much of them, mainly just texts, but Izzy does do a fair amount of talking about them or flashbacking to stuff involving them so you get a few looks into their world. She's tasked with saving her Tita Rosie's failing restaurant, and she has to deal with a group of matchmaking aunties who shower her with love and judgment. But when a notoriously nasty food critic (who happens to be her ex-boyfriend) drops dead moments after a confrontation with Lila, her life quickly swerves from a Nora Ephron romp to an Agatha Christie case.

With the cops treating her like she's the one and only suspect, and the shady landlord looking to finally kick the Macapagal family out and resell the storefront, Lila's left with no choice but to conduct her own investigation. Lila moves to Chicago, goes to college, and of course falls in love, what could go wrong.... boy cheats, she drops out, moves back home to help with the restaurant. overall i didn't mind Lila, she had some real annoying moments of selfishness, held some major resentment against having to be in this small town, was still in love with her high school sweetheart Derek, ignored her best friend's dream of opening a café together. She was a bit on the slow side when it came to figuring out this damn crime. she literally forgets the name of the Mexican restaurant in this small ass town, yet referred to it a good 4 times before and then just be like "what's the name of it again?". Also the damn girl talked way too much about food, i get it you, you love food, you want to be a baker, cool girl but damn, talk about something else.

Adeena (MC's best friend)

we don't get much on the best friend other than she is vegetarian and is a Muslim so can't have pork, thou she has a brother and it seemed like he was eating whatever was handed to him by Lila without caring if it had pork or not. i liked Adeena, she was smarter than Lila, always reminding her to not go investigate by her self, which of course Lila did. i also very much supported Adeena when she got super shitty that Lila was deflecting EVERY SINGLE TIME Adeena brought up opening a café with her, dude she's your best friend, you have been complaining non stop about wanting to bake your shit and all that, but when Adeena askes her to do it, Lila is like "nah dude i don't want to stay in this small town", so you rather try to open a small café in a BIG town and get fucked by the Starbucks down the street, idiot.

Derek (love interest #1/formal lover of the MC/"bad guy")

From what we learn of Derek, he had some major issues in college, which no one seemed to notice or were too busy living up their lives to give a shit about Derek's issues *cough cough* Armin *cough*. He got caught up in drugs, which is typical in a small town, tried to make ends meet, tried to do the good thing, was killed anyway. Poor Derek. Lila was very much still in love with him, they had the whole 1st grade bullshit going on, pulling pigtails and calling each other names. At least Lila was invested enough to solve his murder, thou it was 100% only because she didn't want her family to lose their restaurant.

Armir and Dr Jae (other love interest/lawyer/dentist/not too important to the plot)

Not much to say about either of them, they're just here to be the love triangle we needed? So usually you read any zombie book and they're stuck back in the
1990's with no internet/phones/ cool tech, but this zombie book said eff
that, have way better tech than we do now, but somehow RadioShack is
still in business..... I really liked Georgia, she was a straight
shooter and was in the news to report the actual news which especially
with what is going on in the world as the time i'm writing my review
(covid-19), really hits home about how the news can make or break
things. SPOILER: i think it's 100%
fucked up that Georgia was killed, i really didn't like Shawn too much,
he's a typical boy that really does just go poking shit with sticks for
fun, so i doubt i'll read book 2 any time soonbooklife4lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10079152533708456369noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3595498814257636107.post-46669306112364363342020-04-21T12:44:00.001-04:002020-04-21T12:44:17.090-04:00Skyward by Brandon Sanderson!

I love funny AIs or just AIs that are crazy/funny. M-bot was a hoot, he
better be in the next book. The main character was okay, she whined a
bit too much, and she flipped flopped so much, like act like a bitch and
own it or just shut the fuck up, you can't just keep doing/saying
dumb/bitchy shit and then taking it back right away or feeling bad about
it. SPOILER: I didn't really like the

Again, how can anyone like these books?! The MC gets dumber and dumber
in each book. So book 2 ends SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! with Thomas' body
being discover. *cue dramatic music* So you would think the MC who was
so in love with this kid, never mind the fact that she date another guy
with Thomas was still "missing", would be so distraught and a mess
right? Meh she was upset for a bit, and by a bit i'm talking like a week
at max, then she was moving on to his best friend/roommate, yah you
read that right. And the fucker did the whole line "Thomas never know
what he had when he had you...". So our MC basically jumps into bed with
this dude, A WHOLE FREAKING WEEK AFTER HIS BODY WAS FOUND. WHAT THE

Sophie Kinsella almost never lets me down. I'm actually thinking about
rereading the Shopaholic series next month. I really liked the MC Katie,
Cat i didn't like so much. I just wanted Demeter to be knocked down
some pegs real quick, but later on, not so much. The whole "romance" bit
thou, not believable to me, yah they f**ked a few times, but it felt so
much more like a fling then what it turned out to be. The ending was
too quick for my liking, the building up was so great and the details
were there, but then it was like 15pgs of ending, like this book is
huge, you could have given more to that other than just (view spoiler) Overall a good book by one of my fav authors.

Misc.

Book Boyfriend: None, the guy she falls for is too nonchalant for my liking.
Best Friend Material: Katie!booklife4lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10079152533708456369noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3595498814257636107.post-42948718103454942982018-09-25T22:57:00.001-04:002018-09-25T22:57:31.983-04:00Review: Surprise Me, by Sophie Kinsella!

Usually, and by that i mean, i legit just wrote a review 30mins ago
claiming Kinsella as my fav author, but fav authors can still let you
down. I actually put this book down at some point, i never do that to
Kinsella. The pace in the middle was way too slow for my liking, it's
lulled and it lulled bad. The ending was a bit off for me, like yah you
figure out what is happening, but then they have that weird tea
afterwards, not needed in my opinion. Dan is bae thou, where do i find a

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I will not be writing a proper review for this as almost everyone has already pretty much made up their mind about if they're reading this or not. But i will give my opinion on the matter at hand and if i lose followers/friends because of this, eh, free speech is a wonderful thing. This is going to be long and soapboxy.

Little about me, I live in the USofA, i live in a state very close to the bible belt, i grew up in a veryyyyyy small town where the POCs barely made up a few tables in the lunch room, i am a very fair skinned white girl. I see first hand how racist and how white privileged people act daily. I believe in equal rights for all and try to keep my mind as open as possible, i am friends with anyone whose attitude works with mine and shares my same views regardless of their skin color or social status.

Now this book. Does it have racist undertones, sure does. Does it portray some white privileges, sure does. Is it so bad that i refused to finish it, nope.

There is a WHOLE WEEK for banned book reading! BANNED BOOKS! Lets see what is on this banned book list:

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
, Mark Twain (1884). Reason for banning - Twain’s book is one of the most-challenged of all time and is frequently challenged even today because of its frequent use of the word “nigger.” Otherwise it is alleged the book is “racially insensitive,” “oppressive,” and “perpetuates racism.” (When i had to read this out loud in school, i would only say "N word" that's how bad I am offended by the word)

To Kill a Mockingbird
, Harper Lee (1960). Reason for banning - Others have called it a degrading, profane and racist work that “promotes white supremacy.”

The Autobiography of Malcolm X
, Malcolm X and Alex Haley (1965). Reason for banning - Objectors have called this seminal work a “how-to-manual” for crime and decried because of “anti-white statements” present in the book.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
, by Sherman Alexie (2007)
Reason for banning - drugs/alcohol/smoking, offensive language, racism, sexually explicit, unsuited to age group.

Out from Boneville
(Whole series), Jeff Smith (2005). Reason for banning - political viewpoint, racism, violence.

Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood
, Marjane Satrapi (2000). Reason for banning - politically, racially, and socially offensive, graphic depictions.

So where was all the rage about racism in these books?! Granted a few were written in the 1800's and during a very stressful time in America, but where were you in 2000 or 2005 or 2007 for the other books? Where was the uproar, where was the bashing, where was the threats towards these authors, where was the bloggers begging people to not read these books, to not spend money on these books, where was the boycotts, where was the twitter harassing. Where was it?

We spend a whole week prompting EVERYONE to read these books, to write reviews about them, to have libraries and books stores flaunting these books in huge displays, we have kids dressing up as characters from these books to "celebrate" banned books, we have stickers, and blog banners, and shirts, and mugs, and socks, and bags, and scarfs, and buttons.

Slogans for banned books week: Freadom, celebrate the right to read. Defend the first amendment, read a banned book. Censorship causes blindness. Closing books shuts out ideas.

So please make me understand this, during Banned Books Week, i'm allowed to read books that a shit ton of people find offensive, and i can flaunt it and be proud to read them, but i can't read this book because it offends people...

Bottom line, racism is alive and well in this world, it always will be as long as we let dumb things like this book come between people and/or create issues out of stuff to make issues. The characters in this book are freaking aliens for fuck sake, they are ALIENS! They are traveling through space, SPACE PEOPLE! Pretty sure in Star Trek we figured out they were bound to find a race/species that was very close to where we were in the stone age.

Read it or don't, idc, but don't ever tell someone they can't read a book because it's offensive to others when you sit there for a week reading books that are offensive to others.

End rant.

I liked June to a point, but her weight issues made me super concerned, if you don't have periods anymore, you need to gain weight, bottom line sweet heart. Gigi was probably my favorite, she really loved to dance and was there for the right reasons but the ones around her wanted to crush her so badly, like the butterfly incident, ek! Bette... i want you to be badly hurt, for real, you are a horrible person, horrible! I'm very glad i got to this book, i have had it on hold for awhile, the cover alone gives me chills! It's from a male POV, which did get into those weird "boy thoughts", but not too bad that i was turned off to the story itself. The story does progress rather quickly in terms of zombies, and the pop culture references about zombies were nice! It was a bit hard to imagine some parts where details were a bit lacking, and other parts i felt were too detailed.
