Review: Carve the Mark

Carve the Mark Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I will not be writing a proper review for this as almost everyone has already pretty much made up their mind about if they're reading this or not. But i will give my opinion on the matter at hand and if i lose followers/friends because of this, eh, free speech is a wonderful thing. This is going to be long and soapboxy.

Little about me, I live in the USofA, i live in a state very close to the bible belt, i grew up in a veryyyyyy small town where the POCs barely made up a few tables in the lunch room, i am a very fair skinned white girl. I see first hand how racist and how white privileged people act daily. I believe in equal rights for all and try to keep my mind as open as possible, i am friends with anyone whose attitude works with mine and shares my same views regardless of their skin color or social status.

Now this book. Does it have racist undertones, sure does. Does it portray some white privileges, sure does. Is it so bad that i refused to finish it, nope.

There is a WHOLE WEEK for banned book reading! BANNED BOOKS! Lets see what is on this banned book list:

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn , Mark Twain (1884). Reason for banning - Twain’s book is one of the most-challenged of all time and is frequently challenged even today because of its frequent use of the word “nigger.” Otherwise it is alleged the book is “racially insensitive,” “oppressive,” and “perpetuates racism.” (When i had to read this out loud in school, i would only say "N word" that's how bad I am offended by the word)

To Kill a Mockingbird , Harper Lee (1960). Reason for banning - Others have called it a degrading, profane and racist work that “promotes white supremacy.”

The Autobiography of Malcolm X , Malcolm X and Alex Haley (1965). Reason for banning - Objectors have called this seminal work a “how-to-manual” for crime and decried because of “anti-white statements” present in the book.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian , by Sherman Alexie (2007)
Reason for banning - drugs/alcohol/smoking, offensive language, racism, sexually explicit, unsuited to age group.

Out from Boneville (Whole series), Jeff Smith (2005). Reason for banning - political viewpoint, racism, violence.

Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood , Marjane Satrapi (2000). Reason for banning - politically, racially, and socially offensive, graphic depictions.

So where was all the rage about racism in these books?! Granted a few were written in the 1800's and during a very stressful time in America, but where were you in 2000 or 2005 or 2007 for the other books? Where was the uproar, where was the bashing, where was the threats towards these authors, where was the bloggers begging people to not read these books, to not spend money on these books, where was the boycotts, where was the twitter harassing. Where was it?

We spend a whole week prompting EVERYONE to read these books, to write reviews about them, to have libraries and books stores flaunting these books in huge displays, we have kids dressing up as characters from these books to "celebrate" banned books, we have stickers, and blog banners, and shirts, and mugs, and socks, and bags, and scarfs, and buttons.

Slogans for banned books week: Freadom, celebrate the right to read. Defend the first amendment, read a banned book. Censorship causes blindness. Closing books shuts out ideas.

So please make me understand this, during Banned Books Week, i'm allowed to read books that a shit ton of people find offensive, and i can flaunt it and be proud to read them, but i can't read this book because it offends people...

Bottom line, racism is alive and well in this world, it always will be as long as we let dumb things like this book come between people and/or create issues out of stuff to make issues. The characters in this book are freaking aliens for fuck sake, they are ALIENS! They are traveling through space, SPACE PEOPLE! Pretty sure in Star Trek we figured out they were bound to find a race/species that was very close to where we were in the stone age.

Read it or don't, idc, but don't ever tell someone they can't read a book because it's offensive to others when you sit there for a week reading books that are offensive to others.

End rant.

Short Review: This has a very big Pretty Little Liars feel to it, thou the MCs aren't friends. I liked June to a point, but her weight issues made me super concerned, if you don't have periods anymore, you need to gain weight, bottom line sweet heart. Gigi was probably my favorite, she really loved to dance and was there for the right reasons but the ones around her wanted to crush her so badly, like the butterfly incident, ek! Bette... i want you to be badly hurt, for real, you are a horrible person, horrible! I was surprised by the ending mainly because i'm not sure why this would happen given what has happened in the past. I will pick up book 2 to see where this goes!

Short Review: I've been binge watching Z Nation (its on netflix, it's horrible but addicting #noshame) so hello zombie books. I'm very glad i got to this book, i have had it on hold for awhile, the cover alone gives me chills! It's from a male POV, which did get into those weird "boy thoughts", but not too bad that i was turned off to the story itself. The story does progress rather quickly in terms of zombies, and the pop culture references about zombies were nice! It was a bit hard to imagine some parts where details were a bit lacking, and other parts i felt were too detailed. I am eager to see where the story goes in book 2!

Anyhow, i don't really get the big deal about this dumb knife that went missing, and really the person killed doesn't even make sense to be the one being killed, like the explanation was too farfetched for me, and of course Hannah finds the bottom, but it made me laugh to read about how Hannah's cookies were around the dead body!

For most of this book, all i could focus on was her trying to find the missing thing for the damn cupcakes, sure the guy is dead, but what the fuck is missing from that girl's perfect cupcakes?! I feel pretty back for Mike and the other cops in this town, Hannah solves everything and they didn't figure shit out, but they have the nerve to treat her like shit when it comes to her helping them Give Hannah the damn job!!!!! The little cat side story was a bit weird, but i'm not really a cat person so maybe that's why. I can't wait for Andrea to have the baby!

Short Review: This book has the recipe for the best Blueberry Muffins, and that's all i can think about now. I am so freaking glad Connie was killed, she was the biggest bitch around and i was very glad she wound up dead. The way she treated Jeanie (or Jenny, or Jamie, i didn't catch the name right and i had the audio... ) It bother me that when Connie asked for ovens, they were all too busy and she had to use Hannah's but when Hannah needs ovens, she finds some right off the bat... Hm. Must be nice to be the main character. The back story behind the adopted kid was nice, stretch way to thin for my liking thou.

(I will say i haven't read all her books yet, so maybe she does have some of those, but from what i gather, she doesn't) This book proves it. Lily's childhood was bad. Her dad beat her mother, a lot. Lily escaped that. Lily then gets beat up by her boyfriend, so what does her "sane" but broken mind do... (view spoiler) *DEEP BREATHE* I can't deal with her at all. I really like Atlas thou. Short Review: This was crazy intense. I enjoyed the crap out of this. I read it in one day and didn't want to do adult things til it was finished. So why no 5 stars?! Well, the MC happened. Maybe I'm a very judgemental person when it comes to MCs or maybe i am just bitter and want to be a bitch, both are possible. But she spends the first half of the book freaking out over her sister and then she basically says eff her for a freaking dress, well and a boy basically, but the dress really. Plus she kinds comes across as a man hater and i do not like those MCs at all. Like accept the damn help from the males, don't freak out on them and/or assume they want your lady parts in return.

I thought there was barriers up for this, I thought there was someone watching for people doing this shit, thought they had towers blocking signals and shit, guess for this book, that is all forgotten, how topical. Then we have the power struggle between Emily and Oliver, which hey we have had for about 12 books now! Fuck. I was bored and didn't give any shits about this book because i had to go through a sex scene of Claire and Shane. So close to the end but yet so far it seems. Oh then they are beating up Eve for marrying a vampire right, then later, she is invited to the vampires tea parties.... make sense of that one.

The thread idea was kinda neat, but the way he went about teaching her about them was a bit intense. Then the MC does the dumb thing of overhearing shit and instead of freaking asking her damn husband about it, she just makes a life choice on what she overheard. The love triangle of them plus the Prince, i felt was unneeded til the end, then i really liked how it played into how straight up the Game really had to be. She fails to think things through, fails to see the big picture, fails to see how others will feel about her choices or really fails to even care about them, fails to think before saying anything, fails to know when to wait and when to take action. The eyeball light creeped me the fuck out for sure. It dragged like crazy til like the 60% mark. The Master test was disappointing for sure, should have a whole book on that and made it better than "Make something that lights up"... boring.

Best Part:
Eh.
Worst Part: Very confusing with only one narrator
Thoughts Had: Um. Ok?

Conclusion

Continuing the Series:
Yes
Recommending: Not yet.

Short Review: This was an interesting book for sure. So all these kids have to figure out clues to save their "line", which i am a bit confused on, is that line all their family or all the people where they live, and whats stopping others from moving to the area when they notice someone is getting close to being a winner, would they live at that point or no? That aside. I hate Christopher. I had the audio book and i can say with 100% truth, don't get the audio, read the actual book. They have one narrator for all the POVs which is the biggest pet peeve i have, and some of it is horrible read out loud. At one point i thought my book was stuck repeating some shit, but no, it's how it was supposed to be read...

Best Part:
It was short.
Worst Part: Boring af.
Thoughts Had: Ugh. Just kill someone!

Conclusion

Yes
Recommending: Sure

Short Review: (view spoiler) I find it weird to have Eric actually remember what went on between him and Sookie. Sookie already told him so what's the point of him remembering and bringing it up again. And why the fuck would Sookie break up with someone because they have some slight baggage!?! Ugh. This is why you will probably die alone Sookie. The little Were battle needed to stretch out more. I am eager to learn more about this King thou. Fun stuff.

Short Review: Finally something is happening, bomb threats, Billy is back, the Queen is on trial! Indiana was mentioned! (My state!) And he is a gay vampire, total plus! It dragged so much in the beginning, but around the 85% mark it went crazy! I was speed reading til the end wanting more. I do consider how Billy dealt with the stuff at the end, it was weird, i understand why he wanted to just leave, but idk, hero's welcome anyone?

Worst Part: WHO THE FUCK IS HADLEY!?!
Thoughts Had: Not everyone has access to novella, DON'T PUT MAJOR SHIT INTO THEM

Conclusion

Continuing the Series:
Yes
Recommending: Sure

Short Review: The story building for this is horrible. Legit horrible. So Hadley, which you are NEVER introduced to, died, i guess, oh and she was a vampire... but for real, never fucking explained, maybe if you read the novella between 5 and 6 BUT THAT SHOULDN'T EVER BE REQUIRED FOR MAJOR PLOT THINGS! GRRRRRR. Okay, sorry, but really, fuck that. So Sookie has to go deal with Hadley's stuff, idk why Jason wasn't even involved in this, idk. And of course Eric shows up, and Bills tags along for a crazy awkward car ride. Quinn pops up some. Sookie's sex life is going crazy.
