Series Review: Otherworld!

The Girl Who Never Was

The Boy With The Hidden Name

Sklyar Dorset

Rating: 3stars.

Goodreads Summary: THE GIRL WHO NEVER WAS is the story of Selkie Stewart, who thinks she’s a totally normal teenager growing up in Boston. Sure, her father is in an insane asylum, her mother left her on his doorstep—literally—when she was a baby, and she’s being raised by two ancient aunts who spend their time hunting gnomes in their Beacon Hill townhouse. But other than that her life is totally normal! She’s got an adventurous best friend who’s always got her back and an unrequited crush on an older boy named Ben. Just like any other teenager, right?

When Selkie goes in search of the mother she’s never known, she gets more than she bargained for. It turns out that her mother is faerie royalty, which would make Selkie a faerie princess—except for the part where her father is an ogre, which makes her only half of anything. Even more confusing, there’s a prophecy that Selkie is going to destroy the tyrannical Seelie Court, which is why her mother actually wants to kill her. Selkie has been kept hidden all her life by her adoring aunts, with the help of a Salem wizard named Will. And Ben. Because the boy she thinks she’s in love with turns out to be a faerie whose enchantment has kept her alive, but also kept her in the dark about her own life.

Now, with enchantments dissolved and prophecies swinging into action, Selkie finds herself on a series of mad quests to save the people she’s always loved and a life she’s learning to love. But in a supernatural world of increasingly complex alliances and distressingly complicated deceptions, it’s so hard to know who to trust. Does her mother really wish to kill her? Would Will sacrifice her for the sake of the prophecy? And does Ben really love her or is it all an elaborate ruse? In order to survive, Selkie realizes that the key is learning—and accepting—who she really is.

My Review:

Alright lets start with book 1!
The Girl Who Never Was.

The MC Selkie is an okay character. Nothing too outstanding with her. She has some sass issues and might need a slight attitude adjustment thou. At first she gave off a really good vibe. Strong willed, got stuff done, stood up for herself, untill the whole insta love. *sigh*

The biggest complaint i have is how bad this is insta love! She is best friends with Will, yet knows nothing about him. She doesn't even seem concerned that she never sees him outside the Commons. Then shit starts to go down, and she runs right to him! Then it's like a light bulb went off in her head, and now she knows he's her true love! No thank you! Spoiler, they have sex and then all she can think about is that, like to the point that she puts lives in danger.

The plot was alright. Her evil mom wants her either dead or in prison with her. Evil mom steals Will, so therefore of course Selkie must drop everything to go find him, and even she is telling everyone it's a trap, but still goes! Guess what!? It's a trap.

This author seems scared of heavy scenes so whenever the mood gets too heavy or something really awesome might happen, she jumps to something else.

The ending was wayy too neat and was kinda boring.

Overall, book 1 was meh.

Book 2!
The Boy With The Hidden Name.

You would think with that title, it would be in Will's POV, but that's not right at all. That would have made a lot of sense, but no.

Same issues as book one, but times 3. The love birds put lives in danger because they're blinded by love!

Nothing major happens because the author keeps jumping.

It angers me too. Like the last half of the book is them getting ready to battle, and the author completes skips the whole thing! Wtf.

Overall, a little worse than book 1 but okay.
